Food Safety for Pregnant People During the Holiday Season

The holidays are filled with joy, delicious food, and togetherness — but if you’re pregnant, they can also bring a few food safety challenges. With buffets, potlucks, and long celebrations, it’s important to know how to enjoy your favorite holiday dishes safely.

Here are our top 5 simple ways to protect yourself and your growing baby this season:

1. Keep Foods at Safe Temperatures

Bacteria grow quickly between 40°F and 140°F.

-Keep cold foods cold (refrigerated or on ice).

-Keep hot foods hot (in a slow cooker or oven).

-When in doubt, toss it out. Toss food that’s been sitting out for more than 2 hours.

2. Cook Meat and Seafood Thoroughly

Make sure meats are fully cooked before eating:

Poultry: 165°F

Beef, pork, lamb: 145°F (with a rest time)

Ground meats: 160°F

Seafood: Cook until opaque and flaky; avoid raw oysters, sushi, or smoked seafood (unless heated until steaming).

Stick to fully cooked options like shrimp cocktail, salmon, or crab for a safe and satisfying holiday plate.

3. Choose Pasteurized Dairy & Soft Cheeses

Skip soft cheeses made with unpasteurized milk (like brie, camembert, or queso fresco). Opt for pasteurized versions — they’re safe and delicious.

4. Store Leftovers Safely

Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours, store in shallow containers, and eat within 3–4 days. Reheat until steaming before enjoying.

5. Keep It Festive Without Alcohol

Toast with a sparkling mocktail! Try cranberry juice with seltzer and lime or a pomegranate spritzer. Safe, refreshing, and celebratory.
